How to Build Your Collection of Hockey Autographs
![]() |
If you're a hockey fan, then why not try your hand at collecting hockey autographs? Obtaining the signatures of your favorite players can be fun and sometimes even profitable. Some people prefer to keep their autographs as treasured keepsakes, while others sell their autographs to other collectors. There are two main ways to obtain autographs from hockey players -- in person or via mail.
As you can imagine, getting a player's autograph in person is the most difficult way to obtain a signature. You will need to be in the right place at the right time. Fan events are great places to get some autographs. Some fans even get autographs while at hockey games. For the best chance of success, position yourself at the team exit area. There is no guarantee that you will get even one autograph, but you might get lucky. When requesting an autograph from a player, address them by name, express your polite appreciation and respect their personal space.
Writing for an autograph is an easier way to get one, but may take more time. Many team clubs will forward fan mail to the players. Depending on how much fan mail the player of your choice receives, you have a slight to excellent chance of getting an autograph back. To increase your chances, enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope and a picture or index card for the player to sign. Include a brief note that expresses your appreciation as a fan and politely request an autograph. The only thing left to do is wait. It could take weeks, even months, to get a response.
You might also decide to purchase hockey autographs from other collectors. There are some really fun items out there, including signed hockey sticks, jerseys and collectible cards. Just make sure you're dealing with a reputable seller and ask for a certificate of authenticity. You should get a lifetime guarantee of authenticity with the item. If you don't, it could be a fake and you should steer clear. While some collectors do buy online, it's important to understand the risks of doing so. It's harder to verify the authenticity of an item you don't get to see in person. When purchasing expensive items, use an escrow service and always verify the authenticity of the item with a qualified agency to protect yourself from fraud.
