Baseball autographs have a reputation for being difficult to obtain, and often quite valuable for collectors. If you want to get the autograph of a baseball player in person, you'll need luck and skill. First, arrive at the game early and leave late. Try to get as close to the front row as you can. Hang out by the player exit area after the game, as this is one of the best places to come into contact with the athletes and get your autographs. As you can imagine, obtaining a famous baseball player's autograph is not an easy task. This is why so many baseball enthusiasts choose to purchase autographs rather than obtain them on their own.

Another reason why many collectors purchase autographs from other collectors is because some of the most valuable of baseball players signatures cannot be obtained anymore. For example, historic members of the Hall of Fame like Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth and Joe Dimaggio are deceased, making their remaining autographs extremely valuable. Even less famous players with good careers have autographs that are worth a pretty penny. Examples include Tony Consigliore and Roger Mares. Some collectors like accumulating autographs from rookies that they think may be on the way to illustrious careers.

If you're ready to purchase a valuable autograph, make sure you choose a reputable dealer with a history of honest business practices. The best course of action is to have the item you're considering for purchase authenticated by a respected agency such as Arthur Anderson. This can be expensive, but worth it when it comes to big ticket autographs. Sports autographs like those from baseball players can be found on athletic gear, baseball cards, photographs and autograph books.

A word of caution for anyone looking to purchase baseball autographs is to be very careful when shopping online. This is because it's harder to determine the authenticity of an autograph simply by looking at a picture of it on the computer. There are dishonest sellers out there who will attempt to scam buyers with fake autographs, forgeries, copies and other schemes. Some even try to trick buyers with fake authenticity certificates they made themselves. If you do decide to purchase online, request a certificate of authenticity from a legitimate third-party agency.
